La Geria – Wine region of Lanzarote
In the center of the Canary Island of Lanzarote lies the wine region of La Geria. The Malvasia grapes are grown on black volcanic ash and produce excellent wines. To protect the vines from the trade winds, large funnels are dug and small walls made of lava stones are built. This unique cultural landscape is dotted with a number of bodegas (wine cellars), where the delicious wine can be tasted.

The wine-growing region of La Geria lies between the volcanoes and lava flows of the Timanfaya eruptions (1730–1736) and an old volcanic ridge that separates the central part of the island from the southeastern coast. Numerous paths wind through the vineyards and lead up to the peaks of the surrounding volcanoes. As a result, a hike through this contrasting landscape is an impressive experience and offers breathtaking views.

After a hike through the wine region, one should definitely sample a white wine or two in one of the bodegas. Some of the better-known wine producers located along the wine route include: Bodegas Rubicón, Bodega Stratvs, Bodegas El Grifo, Bodega Los Bermejos, and Bodega La Florida. In addition to the well-known Malvasia white wine, rosé and red wines are also produced.

Wine tasting in Lanzarote is not free. Since air transport is limited to two bottles per person, the wine producers have to charge for the tastings. Olita Trek & Bike invites the participants of the guided walk in La Geria to taste 2 local wines.
